ABSTRACT

The game industry right now is led by people just like the author, who started for a love and passion for games. The industry, however, isn’t flawless. There are many of them, from the incorrect use of crunch time to unprofessionalism, from smaller issues like unorganised documentation—which can be fixed relatively easily—to crucial ones like harassment episodes. The tacit knowledge comes from the lack of professional training: many people who lead the industry are self-taught game designers coming from other jobs, meaning they experimented with techniques until they found the ones that worked. People start talking about their favourite games during lunch and end up playing Dungeons & Dragons together each weekend, creating new bonds in a way that is quite rare, especially considering how hard it often is to make new friends as an adult.
