ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the development of resource management as a construct associated with human factors. A description is provided that outlines the initial identification of resource management as an issue within the applied organisational context, together with the initial approaches to the problem through changes in the attitudes of operators. The transition to different conceptualisations of resource management is discussed, including its application as part of human factors initiatives. The regulation of resource management strategies is considered and provides a basis for the discussion of competency-based approaches to resource management and the principles of threat and error management.
