ABSTRACT
This chapter explores human reliability in complex industrial settings. The nature of probability is examined as a basis for discussing taxonomies of human performance and different approaches to modelling human behaviour. Quantitative and qualitative assessments of behaviour are contrasted as a prelude to a discussion of contemporary approaches to reliability and an analysis of the opportunity afforded by reliability analysis and a proactive approach to the management of system safety.
