ABSTRACT

Preparing future healthcare professionals with the necessary competencies related to patient safety-related issues is the key to success in patient safety practice in the future. Improving the current healthcare professionals’ patient safety competencies is very important in order to improve the patients’ treatment outcomes in terms of efficacy and safety. Patient safety issues such as medical errors, medication errors, surgical errors, adverse drug reactions, drug-related problems are affecting patients, patients families and healthcare system, therefore, the collaboration between the healthcare professionals, healthcare researchers, healthcare educators, healthcare colleges and centers and policymakers are very important and the key to success in improving the patient care, improving the patient safety practice, and preventing harm due to patient safety issues such as medical errors, medication errors, and others. This chapter covers the history and importance of patient safety education.
