ABSTRACT

The wearing away of land surface by the action of natural agencies like wind and water is called soil erosion. The sudden and violent flows move large quantity of detritus, comprising boulders, shingle, sand and silt depending upon the geology of the terrain. Nature of ground cover and land use determine the erosive power. Soil erosion is called “ The rape of the land”. Erosion destroys in days or weeks what has taken centuries to produce fertile top soil in which plants grow. Erosion is brought about by too little rainfall or by too much rainfall. Land-capability classification is arrangement of different kinds of land based on crop produce. Land-capability or soil characteristics depend on. The grouping of soils is based on their capability to produce common cultivated crops, pasture plants. Mechanical measures play a very vital role in controlling erosion on agricultural land. A large portion of clay and organic matter increases the water holding capacity of a soil.
