ABSTRACT

Man can survive without food for a few weeks but without water he cannot survive even a few days and without air even a few minutes. Water is essential to all lives of animals and plants. It has crucial role in industries and steam generation, plays important role in engineering. Water is used in large quantities in the production of steel, sugar, paper, rayon, chemicals, textiles, ice, drinking, bathing, washing, irrigation, fire fighting, power generation and atomic energy. The committee after considering relevant local provisions recommended for maintaining/restoring wholesomeness of water courses and laid stress for controlling the existing and new discharges of domestic and industrial waste into water flows. The global demand for water has increased dramatically over the past century. The demand is a result of increasing irrigation, urban agriculture, industrial growth and rising water consumption per capita for domestic and sanitation purposes.
