ABSTRACT

High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission offers several advantages compared to traditional alternating current transmission systems as the same allows more efficient bulk power transfer over long distances. HVDC transmission systems are becoming an integral part of the electrical power system, improving stability, reliability and transmission capacity. HVDC allows asynchronous power systems to be coupled with ease and gives the operator an ease to control power flow between the two. HVDC provides economical solution, when considering reactive power compensation requirements and overall system stability with an AC-based alternative. This chapter deals with these aspects.
