ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses pump types, pumping head, system head and pump performance curves. With solved example problems, determination of the operating point of a pump when serving a system of known characteristics is explained. Example problems to work out pumping head under various pumping conditions and to find out the head capacity curve for identical pumps in series and parallel are included. Other pump topics covered include affinity laws, homologous pumps, cavitation and permissible suction lift. Operation and maintenance problems associated with pumps are also indicated.
