ABSTRACT

The collection and conveyance of wastewater as an essential component of a wastewater management system is presented in this chapter. The types of sewer systems used for this purpose, and wastewater flow types and conditions are described. The use of Manning’s flow equation to determine sewer flow capacity is explained, followed by numerous example problems. Wastewater flow variation and the effects of infiltration and inflow are detailed. The operation and maintenance of sewers are presented with special reference to sewer blockage, crown corrosion, repairs, dye and smoke testing. The design of an inverted syphon and the design, construction and maintenance of sewer appurtenances such as manholes are demonstrated. Also included is manhole safety and maintenance. The chapter ends with a section on sample collection and flow measurement.
