ABSTRACT

In this chapter, atmospheric stability is discussed in terms of lapse rate. Stability conditions are diagrammed comparing environmental lapse rate with adiabatic lapse rate. Various types of inversions are discussed in terms of the stability of the atmosphere. Atmospheric stability conditions are also related to the type of plume made. Six types of plumes are discussed and illustrated with a diagram. Mixing depth is explained with a couple of example problems. The phenomenon of dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere is modelled and explained using solved example problems. Determination of stack height using empirical equations is also included.
