ABSTRACT

Rural sanitation as an issue of specific importance to village areas or small towns having no amenities related to a water carriage system of sewerage is discussed in this chapter. The major objective of such systems is to remove waste material, including human excreta, in an efficient and hygienic manner. Different considerations to be made for choosing the technology for on-site sanitation, decided based on the socio-economic set-up of the area and sustainability, are discussed. Some of the commonly used methods of rural sanitation in areas where water carriage of excreta disposal is not available are presented.
