ABSTRACT

Sedimentation as a process for the removal of solids by gravity settling is discussed in this chapter. The different types of sedimentation tanks, including tube settlers and pulsator clarifiers, are introduced. Solids contact units for combining coagulation and the settling process, and the use of ballasted flocculation to enhance settling are also discussed. The theory of sedimentation, design parameters and design criteria for sedimentation tanks are described and further explained through numerical examples. Finally, factors that affect sedimentation are discussed and estimation of the quantity of sludge produced is shown by a solved example problem.
