ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the terms disinfection, sterilization, and primary and secondary disinfection. Chemical reactions pertaining to the chemistry of chlorination are presented, followed by discussion of a breakpoint chlorination curve, chlorine demand, and a comparison of free chlorine and combined chlorine residuals. Chlorine demand, chlorine dosage and dosage rate calculations are illustrated with solved example problems. The concept of CT and log removal are included, and example problems are presented to further illustrate these concepts. Chlorination equipment, maintenance, operating problems and hypochlorination are also detailed.
