ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the basic components of the topside of an offshore platform while highlighting the use of different construction materials. Functionally graded materials (FGMs), a novel and recent innovation to topside, are discussed in detail together with their salient advantages and suitability. Fire load characteristics and their cost estimate on structures are presented in detail with simple examples. Details of the numerical analysis of topside under hydrocarbon fire are presented through numerical investigations. Details of front-end engineering design and its application to offshore projects are also discussed in detail. Exercise questions are given at the end of the chapter.
