ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the special guidelines useful for the design of the topside. Due to the use of large-span beams in an offshore topside, lateral-torsional bucking becomes inevitable. The chapter deals with the basic phenomenon of lateral-torsional buckling causes for occurrence and design implications. Examples are presented for a better understanding of the conceptual design. Eccentric loads on beam columns, curved sections for crane hooks, etc. are important concerns, not generally addressed in textbooks, are considered here. This chapter pays attention to the concept of unsymmetrical bending and analysis procedures using MATLAB® code. The derivation of design equations for estimating stresses in curved beams is derived from the first principles, which will be very useful. Exercise questions are given at the end of the chapter.
