ABSTRACT

In this chapter, an overview of plastic and silica waste pollution to the environment is presented. It is no doubt that plastic waste continues to pose serious disposal challenges to different parts of the world. However, plastic remains to be an important material for the production of vital products for livelihoods. On the other hand, silica pollution originating from quarrying and mining of construction materials is an ongoing and growing trend due to the ever-growing construction industry. The chapter begins by presenting the nature of plastic waste pollution, disposal and reuse, and quarry pollution with an emphasis on Kenyan cases. Then, a review of some of the state-of-the-art progress in the recycling of plastic waste for the development of construction materials is presented.
