ABSTRACT

Swedish animation scene puts high hopes on the dystopian feature Metropia. When it proved a big disappointment, producers favored nostalgic children’s programming with Astrid Lindgren’s characters and Bamse, often called the Donald Duck of Sweden.

Compared with Finland, both countries have a strong game industry. Still, only the Finnish game giant Rovio Entertainment grew big in animation too, first in short format and secondly with two The Angry Birds movies rivaling any European animation in long form.

However, not all birds are angry. Rovio’s birds have found successors from Reykjavik to Bergen. The early Chinese coproduction Dibidogs was made in Guangzhou and had very much likeness with Paw Patrol and technological applications like PokemonGo on the test phase.

Although Valhalla stories are familiar in both animation and VFX, the question remains where the animated Kalevala awaits?
