ABSTRACT

All ships must have a Safety Management System (SMS) which is a formal procedure that ensures the safe management and operation of the ship, with an additional onus on protecting the marine environment. The SMS is a key requirement of the International Safety Management Code. The safety committee comprises the Ship's Safety Officer, a safety representative from the deck and engineering rating departments, and any other relevant stakeholders. The main duties incumbent on the Ship’s Safety Officer is surveying the ship for potential hazards which may directly affect the health and safety of the crew. Depending on where and when the ship is operating, the crew may find themselves working in intolerable conditions. One of the main safeguards used on board ships to prevent accidents and injuries is the permit to work. The Muster List is a legal document mandated under SOLAS chapter III, regulation 8 and 37, and applies to all ships.
