ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter sets the scene of the book and discusses the background of F&G design, along with an introduction to some of the challenges the designer of such a system faces. The introduction presents the notion of performance-based design and the importance of adequate methodology selection. It also introduces the importance of technology selection in the overall design. It also introduces some of the main guidance documents available in the industry.
