ABSTRACT
This chapter constitutes a reminder of some fundamental notions encountered in reliability engineering, and in particular the notion of mean residual life and its relation to that of reliability function and failure rate. The uncertainty inherent in any remaining useful life (RUL) prediction is emphasized and the notion of RUL loss rate is introduced and explained.
