ABSTRACT

The basics of lubrication are essential for anyone interacting with lubricants within the industry. This chapter is aimed at informing the reader about the functions of a lubricant and ways in which a lubricant can fail. Additionally, the actual components of a lubricant are explored and the most important characteristic of a lubricant, its viscosity is discussed. Special homage is made to the importance of viscosity and this leads into the different mechanisms of wear to be expected. Overall, this chapter serves as a brief introduction into the world of lubrication and prepares the reader for the upcoming chapters.
