ABSTRACT

The author describes his experiences as a young man brought up on a dairy farm in Western Australia. The description of life in those times is presented to illustrate how a certain amount of hardship is required to build resilience. Some anecdotes are related in a description of his life at primary and secondary school and then at university. Work prior to and during his time at university is covered to show how it was possible to complete university studies by supplementation of scholarships with income earned by working in various jobs. Participation in national military service was another important activity which existed at that time and was an additional factor contributing to resilience building. Gratitude is expressed for the educational opportunities provided by governments via the public. Some criticisms are also raised. The opportunities for all students to be given financial support have led to some negative consequences.
