ABSTRACT

To answer the question posed by the chapter title, it is admitted that science cannot provide all the answers but it is able to make a contribution. It is suggested that the admission of mistakes inherent in the scientific method is better than a dogmatic belief that one is right. Two current topics are particularly emphasized in which it is suggested that mistakes are being made. One is the belief and the policies based on that belief that human activities are contributing to dangerous global warming. The other is the belief that community lockdown is an effective policy for countering the coronavirus pandemic. Neither of the two beliefs is based on true science and arguments are presented to suggest that they are erroneous. Other topics covered are the apparent loss of resilience in the new generations and the unfortunate indoctrination of students to extreme left-wing ideology. This extremism has extended to corporations and to the media.
