ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the description of the Sinai Peninsula (in Arabic Shibh Jazirat Sina) from the geological, climatic, geographic, toponymic and historic perspectives. It is divided into four subsections: Physical borders and landscapes, Climate and paleoenvironment, Flora and fauna and Local geographic names. The variety of landscapes and habitats of the Sinai Peninsula are described. The subsection Flora and Fauna focuses on Mosses and vascular plants, Vertebrates, such as mammals, birds, lizards, snakes, amphibians, and Invertebrates, such as earthworms and butterflies. The difficulty to localise the toponyms of the collection sites is discussed. A list of the most common toponyms and of their common synonyms is provided.
