ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the taxonomic system of the family Tenebrionidae. Mentioned are six subfamilies (Lagriinae, Pimeliinae, Blaptinae, Tenebrioninae, Diaperinae and Alleculinae), tribes and genera and 127 species, and two subspecies of Adesmia metallica, that have been recorded in the Sinai Peninsula. For each examined species, the information given comprises referenced localities, general distribution, as well as comments about the species taxonomy, biology, ecology and physiology (if data available). Distribution maps are added for species that show significant differences in the number of collection sites between North and South Sinai. This chapter lists all species of darkling beetle specimens that were collected by the authors or lent to them by other collectors. They are mentioned under the title Material examined. The second title Referenced localities includes a list of localities described by earlier authors. The General distribution part provides information about global distribution of each listed species. The last part, Comments, gives additional information about taxonomy and phylogeny or about biology, ecology and zoogeography of each listed taxon.
