The use of Maslow’s theory of human motivations as a starting point, with the refinements developed in this book, is the best foundation to prepare a program team to achieve a high level of execution—one that puts it in first place. The six-level hierarchy of human motivation that we have developed is an important tool for establishing this mix. Team members whose self-actualization is at the Professional or Altruistic level are usually most passionate about achieving the purpose of their work and therefore are often more selfless. The basic motivation maturing steps for a developing professional are: After summing up the above development durations, it may be concluded that it takes a minimum of five years-even decades in some cases-for a professional to determine their self-actualization. Highly experienced senior professionals, when their self-actualization is recognized and addressed, usually offer the most valuable innovations and practical process improvements, providing the greatest amount of high-quality work for the program and the enterprise.
