ABSTRACT

Industry 4.0 is a vision and journey. Organizations implement Industry 4.0 initiatives and prepare to turn the clearly documented Industry 4.0 vision, concepts, principles, technologies, and architecture into reality within their context. Germany launched the project “Industrie 4.0” concept to digitize manufacturing in 2011 at Hannover. Moving beyond its roots, today there is a global transformation toward digital transformation of manufacturing and other industries. Evolution of Industry 4.0 has been chronologically explained starting from the “First Industrial Revolution 1784.” The salient features of cloud computing system/Big data/IoT have been explained. Smart manufacturing with the help of cyber tools and also the capture of Industry 4.0 initiatives by the machinery manufacturers have also been elaborated. Examples are the systems that are making inroads in spinning mills, like individual spindle monitoring systems, production monitoring systems, health monitors, energy management systems, and e-bikes with dashboard. Excellence in spinning mills calls for smart manufacturing by working toward benchmarking and scaling themselves up toward newer limits.
