ABSTRACT
This chapter develops the main concepts on the basic calculus of variations theory. Topics addressed include the Gâteaux variation, sufficient conditions for extremals of convex functionals, natural and essential boundary conditions and the second Gâteaux variation. Such a chapter finishes with a formal proof of the Gâteaux variation formula for the scalar case.
