ABSTRACT

It is argued that the First Principles of Physiology, identified by reverse-engineering the cell-cell signaling that gave form and function, are knowable since they are the mechanistic basis for ontogeny and phylogeny, which are one and the same process seen from the cellular perspective, occurring on different time-scales. That is to say, they are diachronic, or ‘across space-time’, given that the innate organizing principle of physiologic homeostasis is fractal. It is hypothesized that the epistatic balancing selection between calcium and lipid homeostasis was necessary for the initial conditions for eukaryotic evolution, triggering the process of vertebrate evolution, continuously perpetuating and embellishing it from unicellular organisms to metazoans in all phyla.
