ABSTRACT

Astro-meteorology is considered as one of the branches of Astronomy along with Astrophysics, Astrobiology and Astrometry. However, the Astrology and Astro-meteorology are the subjects deal in future prediction and often considered as pseudo-science which uses position and movement of stars and planets for that purpose. Astrology links these to predict the human behaviour, while that of Astro-meteorology links the same to predict the future weather. In 904 CE, Ibn Wahshiyya’s Nabatean Agriculture, translated into Arabic from an earlier Aramaic work, discussed the weather forecasting of atmospheric changes and signs from the planetary astral alterations; signs of rain based on observation of the lunar phases; and weather forecasts based on the movement of winds. The development in the science of Agricultural Meteorology and setting up of separate Department of Agrometeorology in India paved way for research in Astro-meteorology. The numerical weather prediction coupled with astro-meteorological prediction will definitely pave way for better weather prediction for the future especially on seasonal scale.
