ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 presents environmental sustainability in city logistics. It describes case studies on the joint delivery systems using urban consolidation centres (UCC) in Tokyo, Japan. It focuses on the effectiveness of the pooling of goods and the integration of UCC in the joint delivery systems to reduce the distance travelled by trucks as well as the environmental impacts. It addresses cargo bikes or electric assisted cargo bikes, which can reduce GHG (Green House Gas) and local emissions, but they need micro depots or satellite facilities to transship goods from delivery trucks or vans to cargo bikes.
