ABSTRACT

The most important purpose of transportation is to hand out the fruits, vegetables and flowers from production center to consumers as rapidly as possible with proper packaging and minimum change in quality of the produce. Losses in quality and quantity during transportation occur due to physical and mechanical injury. Fresh fruits and vegetables are primarily transported by road and flowers by air from farmer to consumer. In earliest the selected fruits, vegetables and flowers are transported only by manually in decorated wooden baskets at nearby markets and specified consumers. Infrastructure like roads, transport, information and communication technology and cold storage are basic requirement for better results in marketing of fruits, vegetables and flowers. The Department of Horticulture and Department of Agricultural Marketing acts as the facilitator for creation of infrastructure facilities for marketing of fruits vegetables and flowers in the states.
