ABSTRACT

The density or Unit Weight of the solids, ρs, is an important property of soils. As described in Chapter 2, the Unit Weight of the solids is needed to calculate the various phase components of a soil mass, such as Voids Ratio, Porosity and Saturation. The Unit Weight of solids is an important quantity for these calculations and should be measured whenever possible. The Unit Weight of solids is also often called Specific Gravity, which can be thought of as the ratio of the Unit Weight of any material to the Unit Weight of water.
