ABSTRACT

Chapter 16 introduces community ecology as the flashy movie star of the subdisciplines, with the most notable human personalities within its history. It lists several questions asked by community ecologists, then spends the rest of the chapter identifying necessary terms. Inter- and intraspecific are contrasted as are symbiosis, mutualism, and facilitation. Examples are presented of each and obligate is contrasted with facultative. A summary of what is known about mutualism is presented, then commensalism is contrasted with amensalism. Predation, herbivory, parasitism, and competition round out the chapter. The chapter ends with a question about competition, which has been the most studied interaction over ecology’s history.
