ABSTRACT

Food contains moisture content which makes them perishable in nature. This perishability causes low shelf life of food. To meet the hunger of the world population, preservation of food is necessary. Drying is good preservation and cost-effective method for the enhancement of storage life. Plastics used in packaging solutions help in increasing the shelf life and during collection, storage, and transportation of fruits and vegetables. Plastics can play a major role in energy conservation. They require minimum energy in production and conversion to finished products. Plastics are used in each and every step of unit operation of postharvest management from packaging to transportation. Therefore, plastics are important for drying and storage of food commodities.
