ABSTRACT

The chapter on space-time exploration illustrates how the Time Editor and Time Player features of the GeoDa software can be exploited for simple space-time analysis in the form of comparative statics. The Time Editor provides a way to group cross-sectional variables observed at different points in time such that their evolution over time can be visualized. By means of the Time Player, the various statistical graphs, such as box plots and scatter plots, can be readily compared over time. This approach also applies to thematic maps, where, in combination with the custom category editor, the spatial distribution of a variable can be tracked over time.

An extension of treatment effect analysis is provided by means of the averages chart, where not treated and control can be selected over time (pre- and post-) as well as across space. The chart allows for a simple difference-in-means test as well as a full difference-in-difference analysis of treatment effects.
