ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the veneration of the Sudarium in the Cathedral of Oviedo since the opening of the Holy Ark until today. It follows the works of Janice Bennet and Enrique Lopez mainly improved with the contributions from the two congresses held in Oviedo for the Sudarium. Although the ceremony of opening of the Holy Ark was not precisely dedicated to the Sudarium, the chapter presents it as the first possible Liturgy related to the Sudarium of Oviedo. The veneration of the relics that arrived in the Holy Ark and the veneration of the Holy Sudarium was one and the same for the first centuries after the opening of the chest in 1075. When the news of the sacred treasure reached the Christian world, popular devotion for the Holy Chamber of the Cathedral of Oviedo grew, despite the access to Oviedo being difficult because of the surrounding mountains.
