ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the foreseen projection of the Sudarium in the scientific as well as religious field. The Sudarium of Oviedo is a purported relic of Christ. Among the relics attributed to Jesus Christ, one is the Sudarium kept in the Oviedo Cathedral. Among the relics preserved in the Holy Chamber there is also a part of a “shroud” that seems to have also arrived inside the Holy Ark. A chronicle made about the years 560–570 by an anonymous pilgrim from Piacenza, Italy, supports the assumption that the Sudarium was preserved in the Holy Land at that time. The Sudarium that was on the Lord’s head was in a cave on the banks of the River Jordan, worshipped by Christians before the invasion of Chosroes II. The Sudarium could have come in the Holy Ark whose content was listed in 1075.
