ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the scientific analysis included in the specific congresses of the Sudarium of Oviedo held in 1994 and 2007 and elsewhere. After the previous “discovery” by Monsignor Ricci and other Italians recommended by him, the direct analysis of the Sudarium has been performed almost exclusively by the EDICES with the agreement of the Council of Canons. According to Morales, in 1572, a wooden frame covered with black velvet provided support for the Sudarium which was fastened to it with a silk cloth. Before the visit of Mons Ricci in 1977, the Sudarium showed the side that was in contact with the skin of the corpse. The Sudarium was dismounted and detached from two white cloths that were in turn nailed to the wooden frame. The Sudarium is preserved in accordance with almost all of the EDICES recommendations.
