ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with two issues in the Shroud that require some explanation because of their inconsistency: The claimed “ponytail” and the Man’s hair remaining next to the cheeks. It deals with the presence of the tress hair looking like a ponytail worn by the Man of the Shroud. Hair diadems were used to simulate the fastening effect of the crown of thorns. Once the Sudarium was removed, the hair almost regained its previous position and the stains of this hair returned to the occipital area. It was verified that the use of a Sudarium such as that of Oviedo justifies itself the irregularity of the tresses of the Man of the Shroud. The hair defying the law of gravity that can be seen in the image of Turin is justified because of the fixing effect that the Sudarium causes on hair compacted by the stains of blood and dust.
