ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the basic concepts and notation related to Functional Data Analysis (FDA) and provides initial information about software used throughout the book. Four data sets are introduced including the NHANES 2011-2014 Accelerometry Data, the COVID-19 US mortality data, a CD4 counts data, and the CONTENT child growth study. Multiple scientific and methodologic problems are identified and data structures for functional data are discussed.
