Introduction

This book about Advances in Design and Testing of Future Smart Roads sheds light on new challenges facing our transport infrastructure, especially roads and streets. Focusing on materials used in roads construction and the traditional structural design of roads and streets in Sweden, the chapter also draws attention to the necessity of smart design of roads. This can be done by considering the effect of current and future challenges manifested by urbanization, digitalization, electrification, and climate change. The most efficient way to deal with the problem of our failing roads is to consider these factors in the early design and construction stages by equipping the roads and streets with new functions to deal with the influencing factors appropriately.
