ABSTRACT

Ocean wave energy has a great potential for renewable power for many regions in the world. The design and development of wave energy converters involve multiple tasks, invoking mechanical system design expertise. This chapter shall discuss the conceptual design of a mechanical wave-energy converter (MWEC) from the basic principles. The device is designed to harvest wave energy through the heave motion of a floating buoy. One of the main advantages of the design is its compactness, which enables its installation on the existing offshore platforms conveniently with a few modifications. Research inputs shared by Dr. Harender Sinhmar, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Shiv Nadar University, (Institution of Eminence) Delhi NCR, India and Mr. Deepak, CR, Scientist- F, National Institute of Ocean Technology, India are acknowledged as co-authors of this chapter.
