ABSTRACT
From the beginning of oral history, earthquakes have been part of the human experience. But scientific and engineering developments toward understanding earthquakes and their effects are of a rather recent origin. Assembly into an organized body of knowledge had to wait for the age of enlightenment. Formal design procedures were not developed until 1908.
