ABSTRACT

The advent of 5G technology has revolutionized the possibilities and capabilities of the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. This chapter explores the synergies between IoT and 5G, with a specific focus on 5G IoT, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT). The chapter begins by providing an overview of 5G, elucidating its key features and technical advancements. Next, the chapter delves into the concept of 5G IoT, highlighting the seamless integration of 5G networks with IoT devices and services. It examines the transformative impact of 5G on IoT applications, including smart cities, smart homes, autonomous vehicles, and precision agriculture. The chapter discusses how 5G’s capabilities—such as high-speed data transmission, ultra-low latency, and massive device connectivity—unlock new possibilities and enable innovative IoT use cases that were previously constrained by network limitations. Furthermore, the chapter explores the role of 5G in driving the IIoT revolution. It examines how 5G networks provide reliable and secure connectivity, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and automation in industrial environments. The chapter discusses the integration of sensors, actuators, and industrial control systems with 5G, facilitating the convergence of operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) domains. Finally, the chapter delves into Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), a wireless communication technology specifically designed for low-power, wide-area IoT applications. It discusses how NB-IoT complements 5G networks by providing cost-effective connectivity solutions for applications with low data rate requirements and extended battery life. The chapter explores the advantages of NB-IoT in areas such as smart metering, asset tracking, and environmental monitoring.
