ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a detailed description of typical loop-type and pool-type fast reactors in India. The loop-type fast breeder test reactor (FBTR) has been in operation since 1985, giving valuable feedback to the design of future reactors. FBTR is based on the RAPSODIE reactor originated in France but has a steam generator and a related steam water system. The prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) has been designed indigenously based on the experience of FBTR and feedbacks from operating fast reactors. Unlike FBTR, there was a huge amount of R&D input for PFBR, which was carried out in-house and with collaborating Indian institutes. It is in an advanced state of commissioning. The important neutronic and thermal hydraulic characteristics of fast reactors are briefly discussed.
