ABSTRACT

Not all raindrops can fall to the ground – some fall on vegetation and some are lost to evaporation. In addition, not all rainfall runs off – some is infiltrated into soil and some puddles and is stored in depressed areas. Soil infiltration and depression storage are the major hydrologic losses considered in rainfall and runoff modeling. During a storm event, overland flows occur after the soils become saturated and/or rain arrives more quickly than soils can absorb it. In this chapter, we focus on how to numerically model the net rainfall and soil losses.
