ABSTRACT

Outland Renewable Services was issued the citations for exposing maintenance technicians to electrical hazards from the unexpected energization of transformers in three wind turbine towers. A willful violation is one committed with intentional knowing or voluntary disregard for the law's requirements, or with plain indifference to worker safety and health. Wind energy workers are exposed to hazards that can result in fatalities and serious injuries. Workers who erect and maintain wind turbines can be exposed to fall hazards. Wind energy employers also need to look at the hazards of the confined spaces to determine whether those spaces are “permit-required” confined spaces (PRCS). Wind turbines may have fire hazards because of the electrical pars and the combustible materials such as insulation or the material of construction used in the turbine housing (nacelle) or lubricants invoking in its operation. Wind energy employees need to be trained about fire hazards at the worksite and about what to do in a fire emergency.
