ABSTRACT

Climate change, shortage of fossil fuels, pollution generated by fossil fuel usage, and concerns related to environmental conditions have necessitated the need to incorporate renewable energy sources into the overall energy supply. The wind turbine harnesses the wind—which is a free, clean, and far and wide available renewable energy source—to generate electric power. Designers favor ferrous materials because there is extensive design experience with these materials from the mining industry, and they are relatively cheap to purchase and machine; moreover, they are easily fabricated using conventional practices. Fiberglass-reinforced composites are currently the blade materials of choice for wind turbine blades. A wind farm or, by another name, wind park or wind power station or wind power plant is an array of wind turbines in the same location used to produce electric power. Linking the transmission system to the distribution system that delivers electricity to the end users is a substation.
