ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the challenges faced in urban cities and how smart city can help curb the challenges. The chapter begins with an introduction and elaboration of current trends about the smart city concept. The following section looks at specific issues in city planning, development, and smart city operation. The blockchain technology possesses promising characteristics that have a major role to play in the smart city governance. The issues identified here can be solved with the modern technologies such as the blockchain technology. Therefore, this chapter explains some of the blockchain solutions that can be incorporated in the smart city ecosystem to help in the governance of such cities.
